Encountered just beyond a hand-dug tunnel: two bear cubs

According to the Saitama Prefectural Police, at around 11:50 PM on the 12th a bear about 1.5 meters long was sighted near the Takizawa Dam management office in Otaki, Chichibu. The police warned people to be cautious when going out and advised on how to act if a bear is nearby (do not turn your back and slowly retreat, etc.).

Around 23:50 on March 12, 2026, a bear about 1.5 meters long was reported sighted near Mitsumine Shrine in Ōtaki, Chichibu, according to Saitama Prefectural Police. The police have urged people to be cautious when going out and provided guidance on how to behave if a bear is nearby.

According to Saitama Prefectural Police and Ogano Town, between the night of Dec 23 and the early morning of Dec 24, 2025, hunters found bear footprints in Ryokami Komori Yamada Okubo in Ogano Town. The footprints were found on the opposite riverbank from an area with inns, hot springs, and a roadside station; the town is urging caution. On Dec 22 there was also a report of a bear-like animal near Hannya no Oka Park.
