At around 06:45 on May 21, 2026, a bear was sighted in the Mizusawa No.3 area of Tokamachi City near Echigo-Mizusawa Station; it crossed National Route 117 and headed toward the Shinano River. A warning was issued advising people to avoid forests and thick grass nearby.

Observed one bear moving from the Ojiya-Tokamachi-Tsunami municipal road toward the Shinano River (east side), just before the Fukasawa River.

Two sets of bear tracks were found in a field near the Shidō Motoyashiki-Mandakura line. One adult bear and one cub. They were moving southwest. The tracks appeared to be several days old when discovered.

A single cub was sighted beside the Ken-Do Ojiya-Tsunan road. Body length about 1 m. It appeared to have crossed from the east side of the road to the west. After noticing people it fled back to the east. Footprints were found in a field on the east side of the road.

When I left the house to cut grass, I spotted one bear about 50 m away. Its body length was approximately 1 m. It ran into the grass on the north side. I could not confirm where it exited the grass. The city website received an email reporting a sighting on the same day at around 14:20 on National Route 117 in the Imozawa area. It is believed to be the same bear.

An animal believed to be a black, rounded bear was sighted. On-site inspection found no body or footprints. Based on the sighting information, it is highly likely to have been a bear. Body length approximately 50–100 cm. One individual. Additionally, on the same day there was a bear sighting report from Mizusawa Junior High School; no footprints were found there either.
