In April 2025, three residents in a residential area near the Chikuma River in Iiyama City were attacked by a bear and sustained serious and minor injuries. On November 21, 2025, the Chikuma River office of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism began cutting vegetation on the riverbed to remove bear routes and hiding places and to reduce bear appearances near populated areas.
