In the early morning of July 12, in a residential area of Mitsutake, Fukushima Town, a 52-year-old newspaper delivery worker, Kenju Sato, was attacked by a brown bear and dragged about 100 meters into nearby bamboo thickets, dying from his injuries. He suffered scratches over his body and bite wounds mainly to the abdomen; the attacking bear was estimated at about 1.5 meters long.
