Hayachine Quasi-National Park saw its most striking recent incident on March 8, 2026, near the 5th station of the Iwakami-yama trail in Kugai, Miyako City, where a 69 year old man fell waist-deep into a snow hole and was bitten on the left calf by a black bear. That encounter is the latest reminder that bears are still moving through this park country, and the area has now recorded 18 black bear sightings overall.
The most active places have been around Miyako, Morioka, and Tono, with reports also coming from Hanamaki. Activity has peaked in May, with 2 incidents in May 2024 and one each in May 2023 and May 2025, while other months such as August 2025, March 2026, and September 2023 each added single reports.
