Kakinoshima Site has been seeing brown bear activity tied to nearby Hakodate neighborhoods, and the most recent sharp sign came on February 5, 2026, when bear like footprints about 13 centimeters wide were found at a printing company in Suzurankamachi and also in Suzuranoka cho, with the tracks heading east. Earlier, on January 10, 2026, two bears about 1.5 meters long were seen crossing National Route 278 in Eshiyama cho before returning to the mountains.
The busiest ground for reports has been around Hakodate, especially Suzuran oka cho, Suzurankamachi, and Eshiyama cho, with activity also reaching Asahiokacho, Kinaoshicho, and Shikabe Honbetsu. The monthly rhythm is strongest in September 2025 with 19 incidents, followed by August 2025 with 12 and July 2025 with 11, while October 2025 still stayed active with 8; across this area, the record now stands at 179 brown bear sightings overall.
