On Monday, June 8 at approximately 9:35 p.m., near the 184.3-kilometer post on the inbound (upbound) lanes of the Tohoku Expressway at 40-2 Ikenoiriyama, Fumase, Izumizaki Village, a large commercial truck driven by a man in his 50s, traveling in the first lane of the inbound direction, collided with a bear (about 1.5 m in body length) that crossed from the right side to the left of the vehicle’s direction of travel. The driver of the vehicle sustained no injuries. There were no passengers. The bear was confirmed dead at the scene of the traffic accident.

The bear’s size was about 1.0–1.2 meters. The bear entered the park-side thicket once, but then returned to the same spot. After that it repeated disappearing into and reappearing from the thicket three times, and finally disappeared into the thicket. At that time, there were only a few cars in the parking lot. Also, traffic between Tersa and Aeon was not heavy. Weather: clear. Temperature: 18°C.

[Post] While walking from Izumi-Sotoasahikawa Station I saw a black moving object. Larger than a dog, about 1.2 m. It looked like its front leg was injured.

Around 04:20 on May 18, a black bear about 1.2 meters long was sighted near JR Izumigaoka-Akihikawa Station in Sotoasahikawa, Akita City; it appeared to have an injured front paw. On May 17 in the same area, a bear believed to have an injured front paw entered a private property, and police responded by setting off firecrackers.

At around 18:20 on May 17, 2026, a resident reported seeing two bears (approximately 1.5 meters and 1 meter long) walking in a rice paddy in Mori-no-oka 3-chome, Taiwa Town, Miyagi Prefecture, and called emergency services.

At around 17:45 on May 17, one bear was sighted on the grounds of a private home in Gaikasugawa, Sango-dena, Akita City. The Akita Rinko Police Station has not confirmed whether the bear left and is continuing to monitor the area, saying the bear may still be on the property.

[Report] Passing through Sotoasahikawa Anpasu. Came out in front of a car, went through the irrigation channel behind Maruhan Sotoasahikawa, crossed from Akigin Sotoasahikawa branch toward the dentist opposite, entered the grounds of the house behind the dentist, and is believed to still be on that property. Appears to have an injured right front leg and was limping while running. Body length about 1.2 m.

At around 13:15 on the 17th, a man visiting the prefectural Gokoku Shrine in Terauchi Ohata, Akita City, saw a bear approximately 1.5 meters long. The bear moved eastward, was about 20 meters from the nearest building, and the Akita Rinko Police are patrolling the area by patrol car and warning residents.

On Sunday, May 17 at about 7:30 a.m., near the entrance of Ouse Park at 1-3 Higashinagakura, Kawauchi, Ouse-machi, Koriyama City, a witness (male, seated in the passenger seat of a vehicle) observed one bear (approximately 1 m in body length) crossing the road to the east and entering the woodland.

Around 07:30 on the 17th, a man in a car reported to police that he saw a bear crossing the road near the west entrance of Ouse Park in Ouse-machi, Koriyama. According to the police the bear, about 1 meter long, crossed the prefectural road and entered the forest in the park; the park had been closed after another sighting on the afternoon of the 16th and staff are patrolling and using firecrackers as countermeasures.

At around 07:30 on May 17, 2026, a man in a car spotted one bear crossing the road and entering the forest near the entrance of Ouse Park in Ouse-cho, Koriyama City, and reported it to the police. Ouse Park has been closed since the 16th after staff found a bear inside the park, and the animal seen this time is believed to be the same one based on its size.

Around 04:30 on May 17, 2026, a female newspaper delivery worker spotted a bear about 50 cm long in shrubbery among houses in Yawata 5-chome, Aoba Ward, Sendai. The bear left the scene; police patrolled the area but did not find it. The sighting location is about 300 meters in a straight line from Osaki Hachiman Shrine.
