Nishigo has just seen its most serious bear incident at the JSDF Shirakawa Nunobiki yama training area on April 22, 2026, where a male SDF member in his 30s was attacked while checking the site after a forest fire and firefighting work. On the same day at the same training ground, dry grass had ignited during live fire training, a forest fire spread, and a man later encountered the bear during the post fire check.

Most of the recent activity has clustered around Kumakura and nearby parts of Nishigo, with additional sightings along National Route 289 at Mafune and on roads and slopes where people have been driving or walking dogs. Activity has been strongest in February with 7 reports and again in November with 7, while the area has recorded 76 black bear sightings overall.
