On April 23, 2026, a black bear was reported near Ōbadani chi in Kazuno, about 5.5 km from the Tamagawa Onsen No.1 parking lot toward Kazuno. The bear was on a snowy slope, noticed a car, panicked, and ran uphill toward Tamagawa Onsen, which is the sharpest recent reminder of how close these animals are coming to the roadway here.

The busiest places have been around Kazuno, with more activity also appearing in Semboku Tazawako Tamagawa. The pressure built hardest in September 2025, when the area saw 12 reports, and stayed active through August 2025 with 9 and October 2025 with 5, after quieter stretches in November 2025 with 2 and April 2026 with 2. Across Mount Hachimantai, there have been 80 black bear sightings in total.
