Tokyo’s most striking recent report came on April 25, 2026 in Ōme Katsunuma, where one black bear was seen on the way back from Ome Railway Park to Ome Station; the animal was first heard above the road near a cliff edge and then spotted behind a tree. Another close call came on March 30, 2026 in Hachioji, when a bear ran across the hiking trail on Mount Jinba about 50 to 100 meters ahead of hikers.

Activity is heaviest in the western mountain belt, especially around Hachioji, Ōme, Akiruno, and the Tokyo mountains near Mount Odake and Mitakesan. The busiest stretch came in October 2025 with 60 incidents and November 2025 with 55, before dropping into winter, while Tokyo has recorded 900 black bear sightings overall.
