Ichimantosha Shrine saw one of the latest black bear reports on May 5, 2026, when a bear about the size of a large dog was seen in a farm field in Oyabe and moved to the southeast. That same stretch of days brought more reports from Oyabe and nearby Takaoka, including a bear cub and several sightings of an animal believed to be a bear, which shows the activity is staying close to the edge of fields, roads, and settled ground.

Most of the recent pressure has been centered in Oyabe, Takaoka, Toyama, and the Tsubata Kurikara area, with the busiest months landing in November 2025 with 197 incidents and October 2025 with 156, then easing through winter before rising again in March 2026 with 12 and April 2026 with 15. Across this area, black bears have been recorded 2,261 times overall, so this is not a one off event but a long running presence around the shrine and the surrounding towns.
