On Sunday, June 7 at approximately 11:26 a.m., on the downhill lane of the Tohoku Expressway (Ban-etsu Expressway) near 107.2 km in Shimokawamae, Sarashina, Bandai Town, a passenger car driven by a man in his 60s, traveling in the first lane of the downhill direction, collided with a bear (about 50 cm in body length) that crossed from the right to the left of the travel direction. There were no injuries to the vehicle’s driver or other occupants. The bear was found dead near the accident site.

The driver of the colliding vehicle was uninjured. There were no passengers. After striking the vehicle, the bear departed the scene in an unknown direction.

The bear entered the mountain northwest of the cemetery, and its subsequent movements are unknown.

After being sighted, the bear entered the forested area deeper in the bamboo grove, and its subsequent whereabouts are unknown.

After being sighted, the bears returned into the forest and their subsequent whereabouts are unknown.

The same day, another ~1.0 m bear was seen in Hanamigaoka 2-chome climbing a tree, a ~0.6 m bear was seen climbing a residential fence in Hanamigaoka 1-chome, and a ~0.5 m bear was observed walking along a forest road and entering woodland in Shirakawa-shi, Daisin Masumi Oaza Ohninata — four bears were reported in total.

Police continue patrols by cruiser and are sharing information with Aizuwakamatsu City Hall.

The bear left the area via the south-side slope of the road.

On Wednesday, May 27, at about 11:00 a.m., in a forested area of Tamanashi, Kaneyama Town, a contracted municipal worker (male, in his 70s, resident of Kaneyama Town) identified as Mr. A was attacked by a bear (about 1.2 m in length) while performing trail maintenance as part of a two-person team. Mr. A suffered injuries including a bite to his right arm. The circumstances of the injury are under investigation. After the injury, the person working with him called emergency services (119), and Mr. A was transported by ambulance. His life is not believed to be in danger.
