Higashinaruse saw its most recent bear trouble on April 9, 2026 in Iwaigawa, when a single adult Asiatic black bear was spotted by nearby residents and tracks longer than 20 cm were found nearby. Its whereabouts are still unknown, and that comes after earlier attacks in March 2026 in Higashinaruse Village, where bears injured people during farm work.
The hardest hit places have been Higashinaruse Village, Iwaigawa, and Tagochi, with bears also turning up near houses, roads, rivers, and even a campground and shiitake mushroom house. Activity has been heaviest in October 2025 with 73 incidents, then November 2025 with 24, while winter reports still came in during December 2025 with 4 and February 2026 and March 2026 with 1 and 2 respectively. Across Higashinaruse, there have been 149 black bear sightings in total.
