Kotodai Park is watching a fresh wave of black bear activity in Sendai: around 22:00 on May 6, 2026, a driver in Kamiyatagari, Izumi Ward saw a bear about 1 meter long crossing the road at an intersection in front of a shopping mall, and nearby reports that same night also placed another bear in Izumi Ward near the Sendai North Ring Road and a prefectural road. Earlier in the week, a bear of about 1 meter was seen in Moniwa Hitokurita Higashi, Taihaku Ward on May 5, and another was spotted in Nishikigaoka 9 chome, Aoba Ward around 17:30 on May 5 and again later that evening.

The busiest ground has been around Izumi Ward, Aoba Ward, and Taihaku Ward, with evening and night reports showing up again and again across the city. The monthly totals climbed from 21 in February 2026 and 26 in March 2026 to 48 in April 2026, while earlier months were much heavier, including 488 in October 2025 and 396 in November 2025. Across the record, Sendai has logged 2,720 black bear sightings, and the pattern here has stayed strongest in the city’s green edges, road crossings, and neighborhoods after dark.
