Hachimantai has just seen one of its most serious bear incidents: on May 7, a woman in her 60s who had gone out to gather wild plants was found dead in woodland near Nishine Terada, with injuries that police said were consistent with a black bear attack. Another report from the same day says a woman in Tadagashira was found unconscious in mountain forest with claw injuries, and on May 8 at 05:30, a resident saw an adult black bear crossing a prefectural road about 500 meters south of Nishine Daiichi Junior High School in Horikiri.

The most active areas in Hachimantai have been Tadagashira, Nishine Terada, and Appi Kogen, with recent reports also coming from Kamiseki. Activity has been heaviest in February with 4 incidents and in November 2025 with 5, while reports also appeared in October 2025, September 2025, August 2025, May 2025, April 2025, and February 2025. Across Hachimantai, there have been 51 black bear sightings overall.
